Analog Street Photography
Semnan, Iran · 2013–2014 · 35mm black-and-white film
These analog street photographs record some of my earliest experiences with the camera. Made in Semnan, a religious city in Iran, they capture people's spontaneous reactions on noticing that they are being photographed.
A clear difference emerges between men and women. Many women turn away or cover themselves from the lens, while many men meet the gaze of the woman behind the camera with confidence.
I developed every negative myself and made all the prints on photographic paper with an enlarger in the darkroom. Fresh, in-date film was not available in Iran at the time, so I often worked with expired stock. Processing it was unpredictable, and the results varied from roll to roll.
